Princess Peach was once again kidnapped by Bowser. At first, it seemed like an ordinary rescue mission just like any other before it.

However, as Mario, Luigi and Peach made their escape, Luigi didn't come by unscathed when one of Bowser's "Mutant" Koopas snapped its jaws into the younger Mario brother's arm.

Little did anybody in the castle suspect the serious condition behind the infection Luigi was carrying. The hours loomed long into the night and Mario's pressing worries came true after he suspected a heightened aggression from his little brother.

That one night, both Mario and Peach were suddenly attacked on two separate occasions by a demonic Luigi. Worried, and beset by the situation, the residents of the castle were left with no choice but to tie Luigi up out of safety for the time being, though it was to no avail.

As both Mario and Luigi slip off into sleep, they exchanged words in a strange conversation, with Luigi apparently going insane and urging Mario to prepare for the inevitable. Was it just a distorted fabrication of Luigi's infection or was it really Luigi to whom Mario was speaking to in that flimsy world?

When Mario awakens, he realizes to his horror that Luigi has disappeared and has taken Peach as well. Toadsworth who's extremely worried for the princess's safety, settles and finally entrusts Mario with an important item to be used when the time comes. As Mario makes his way to Bowser's castle to encounter the forces of Dark Land and confront the King of Koopas, he's sure he'll find Peach....and most importantly, that little brother of his, who has gone missing.
